I played soccer for the AYSA; there was no higher level of youth soccer in the Duluth area when I grew up (high school soccer started 4 years after I graduated).  I got into coaching just after high school when my cousin's U10 team needed a coach back in 1988.  Since then I've coached many U10 through U17 teams, both in local rec and in state-wide competitive leagues, and have brought two teams to play tournaments in Sweden in the Duluth-Växjö Soccer Exchange.  I also currently coach for Gitchi Gummi Soccer.  I started at Denfeld as the assistant coach in 1994 and have been the Head Coach here since 1995.
My soccer philosophy is based on teaching the fundamentals of soccer, teamwork, and in encouraging each player's full commitment to achieving his personal goals as well as the team's goals.  I believe that when teammates work hard for each other, they have more success.  I also believe Denfeld's players should be leaders in their school and in the community at large; we're students and gentlemen first, athletes second. 

I expect dedication and positive attitudes from each player, even when things are not going the way we'd like. We might not win each game, but we will persevere by playing fairly and practicing hard to improve our soccer knowledge and capabilities. I want players to approach every practice and game as a chance to improve themselves and their game.

If you're reading this, you're most likely passionate about the game. So am I. I will remain open to your thoughts and opinions. Through collaboration and teamwork, our objectives can be fulfilled.

Assistant Coaches

Our Assistant Coaches over the last several years have been Denfeld Soccer Alumni.  Currently, we have Zack Braack, class of 2013, and Matt East, class of 2014, sharing the JV head coaching/varsity assistant duties.  Before them we had Josh Jurek, Class of 2009, for a season (he's now coaching elsewhere), and Jake Lammi, class of 2000, was the JV/Varsity asst. for many years.  All four of these coaches gave back to their team and school; they are much appreciated!

 

 

Is there a pre-registration?   Yes, registration materials are online at https://denfeld.isd709.org/activities-athletics on the activities page.  Note that students need to sign in to their School gmail account to access this.  If you're new to Duluth Public Schools, you'll be able to get your gmail account in August.  

• New players, please also sign up to tryout here or contact Coach Anderson to get on the tryout roster.
• There will be a preseason meeting at Denfeld in August.  Watch the school's newsletter and Activities Webpage for more info.

Who can try out? Any Duluth Public Schools' student living in the Denfeld attendance area who will be in grades 7-12.  (Charter, parochial and other private school students may not try out.  However, home-schooled students may try out as long as they reside in the attendance area).

What do I need for tryouts? Bring a ball, water, and proper equipment.  You must have necessary paperwork completed online.  Your 7th and/or 10th grade physicals, dated after June 1, 2021, must be complete and on file with the DHS Nurse's office or brought to first session.  Paperwork can be picked up at the pre-registration meeting in August or found at www.isd709.org.  

Are captains' practices or summer workouts mandatory?  No, you do not need to attend, but these do help you get into playing shape!  Captains will contact you sometime in July or early August.  Contact coach for info on summer workouts.

How many games do we play?  We typically have varsity scrimmages the first Saturday of the season.  The Varsity squad competes at the Single A level and usually has 16 regular season matches starting the Thursday, Friday, and/or Saturday of the 2nd week.  Section playoffs and State games for varsity are in October.  The JV team will have 14 to 16 scheduled games. 

How often and where do we practice? Practices are held daily after school or in the evenings, Monday through Friday, at either Stowe Elementary Field, Lincoln Middle School Field, the old Central HS, or at Denfeld.  In August, you may have some early, daytime practices. We occasionally go to youth practices and invite them to join us.  A calendar of events can be found on this site.

Denfeld Girls Soccer 2026

Welcome to the 2026 season. Here are some items for you to know and complete to have a successful season. 

⚽Coaching Staff:

This season Leah Hamm will be on maternity leave. She will act as a volunteer coach. She is excited to be able to hang around and bring her new baby, Peter, to practice. 

The athletic director, Dave Bergan, worked with Leah to decide what was best for the program. They chose to name an interim head coach, which is me, Cass Welhouse. I am so excited to be joining the program and can’t wait to get the season started. 

This season we are so lucky to have Bell Grochowski and Anna Foldesi continue as co-coaches of the JV team. These two have been with the program for several years, and we are happy to have them back again!

There will be two volunteer assistant coaches, Krysta Mielke and Andy Larson. These two have a wealth of experience and a ton of passion for the game. We are excited to have them on our sideline. 

Well we know that change is hard and can come with its own challenges, Leah and I are excited to work together to continue to build a program that centers around student-athletes and their needs. 

📋Tryouts:

Tryouts will take place on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday (8/17, 8/18, & 8/19) from 9am-12pm at Denfeld Stadium. In order to be named to a team, you will need to be present at all three dates. 

Please arrive 15 minutes prior to tryouts to get checked in.

Due to being new to the program, and gaining several new coaches we are going to have a pre-tryout form for you to complete this year. This form is separate from the form to register for girls soccer through the school district- please complete BOTH. This will help coaches be organized, get to know players, and will create a fair evaluation process.

📎Registration & Forms:

Please also complete registration for Denfeld through Arbiter. If you have played a sport through the district, you should already have an account. DO NOT CREATE A NEW ONE, one account per family. Payment for your activity will also take place on Arbiter and is due before our first game. They will not take payment prior to teams being named. If you are in need of any financial assistance, please reach out to the activities office. 

Your player will also need a sports physical in order to participate in the 2026 season. If you believe your player already has their physical on file, please double check through your Arbiter account. 

All interested players are allowed to participate in tryouts. Sports physicals are required by 8/19 to continue to participate. Players will be asked to sit out all events following this date if physicals are not submitted.

It is recommended that you get a sports physical your 7th and 10th grade year as they are good for three years. Any sports physical prior to 7th grade does not count.
